What would you classify your music as?
Atmospheric Country? Rock & Roll? Gram Parsons gave his the moniker “Cosmic American Music.” Sometimes we just say we play American music...but really, our job is just to make the best music that we possibly can. Then, it’s the world’s to judge.

Who writes the songs?
Chad does most of the writing. Some of the songs Morgan D. & Chad wrote together, and a some of them were collaborations between Chad and his songwriting partner W.B. Givens. Once the melody and lyrics are done, we arrange everything as a band.

What are your favorite topics to write & sing about...?
Belonging, death, perspective, form & function.

...and how do you get inspiration to write songs?
By the same things that inspire us to get out of bed.

Can you tell anything about your upcoming album?

Actually, we’ve kind of kept it a secret until this interview.

Our process as songwriters and producers is meticulous, organic, and often slow. We want people to experience the record in the same way: organically, slowly—it all begins with a word or an image. It seemed appropriate to start the conversation far away from our home, in a foreign language.

Plans for the future?
The music industry is one in a particularly turbulent state of flux; With such an unsteady infrastructure and so many variables, it is hard to predict with any real accuracy where any musical endeavour will stand in 5 years. Generally speaking, The Kid Carsons plan on writing and recording as many beautiful songs as humanly possible. We love to perform—especially in places we have never been before—

so we definitely plan on touring Europe in the near future.

There has also been talk of Australia...who knows. In the States, we want to play more festivals and shows in the northwest and midwest. We also plan on not being broke forever. Currently, we’re working hard on our first, full-length LP in our home studio in New Orleans, lovingly dubbed Bear America Records. Tell yo friends!

How do you write your songs in the band?
Every song is different (and should be treated as such), but the last couple have been concept first, then melody, then lyrics. Sometimes its the opposite. Sometimes it all comes at once. Lightnin’ Hopkins called those “sky songs.” We are very aware of the limitations of our medium, but are also constantly trying to see how far we can push songwriting as a craft by looking at form and process from disparate perspectives. We are currently working on 4 song-based projects, all of which have very different goals and foundations.

Your musical influences?
Townes Van Zandt, Gram Parsons, Michael Hurley, Steve Earle, Son Volt, Eric Whitacre, Woody Guthrie, Tom Waits, Lucinda Williams, Lightnin’ Hopkins, David Lynch, Merle Haggard, A. A.
